How to Prepare Your Child for a Smooth Start at ADM

The end of summer brings excitement and sometimes a few jitters—as children prepare to return to school. Whether your child is new to All Day Montessori or returning for another year, a little preparation can go a long way in creating a smooth and positive transition.

Here are a few practical tips to help your child feel confident and ready for that first day!

1. Start the Routine Early

Begin adjusting your child’s daily routine at least a week before school starts. Set regular wake-up, meal, and bedtime schedules that mirror the school day. Children thrive on consistency, and a predictable rhythm helps reduce anxiety when school begins.

2. Get Organized Together

Let your child help pick out their school gear, water bottle, indoor shoes, and backpack (if needed). Label everything clearly with your child’s name. This promotes independence and gives your child a sense of ownership over their belongings.

3. Talk About What to Expect

Read books about starting school, and talk positively about the classroom, teachers, and friends. If your child is returning, help them reflect on past school memories. For new students, review what drop-off will look like and reassure them that you’ll return at the end of the day.

4. Validate Their Feelings

It’s normal for children to feel a mix of excitement and worry. Let them know their feelings are okay and reassure them that their teachers are there to help. A short, confident goodbye at drop-off helps your child build trust in the school routine.

5. Practice Calm Mornings

The first day sets the tone! Prepare as much as you can the night before, and give yourselves a few extra minutes in the morning. A calm, unhurried start supports a more relaxed transition for both parent and child.

We are excited to welcome your family into a new year of learning, growth, and joyful discovery. With a little preparation, your child will be well on their way to a confident and happy first day!
